Rideshare programs have completely revolutionized the way people travel, commute, and get to their intended destinations safely. Programs such as Uber and Lyft are great resources for people looking to travel in unfamiliar places or get transportation that would otherwise be impossible. For most rideshare users, not much thought is given to the transaction outside of checking the ratings of the driver and getting into the right vehicle. While most experiences are safe, there is always an underlining risk of serious injury or even death if you find yourself involved in a traffic accident. If your rideshare driver is involved in an accident, there are certain things you should do following the incident.

What Can Cause a Rideshare Accident?

Like any other driver on the road, a rideshare program driver is responsible for maintaining the rules and regulations of the road. However, accidents can happen for several reasons including:
  • Speeding
  • Ignoring traffic laws
  • Distracted driving
  • Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
  • Driving while fatigued
  • Poor vehicle maintenance
While you want to believe your driver would only operate under the best conditions, they are human and prone to making the same driving mistakes as anyone else on the road.

Steps to Take Following a Rideshare Accident

Any level of involvement in a vehicle accident can be overwhelming, even as a passenger. There are a few different steps you can take to ensure your rights are protected, including calling all necessary law enforcement and medical support, collecting evidence, and contacting a rideshare accident lawyer.

Contacting Medical Care and Law Enforcement

Rideshare accidents can result in serious injuries to the individuals in either vehicle. It is important that you first check yourself and others, if possible, for injuries and assess whether immediate medical assistance is necessary. If there is any doubt, it is better to be cautious. Certain injuries may take time to present themselves or appear minor due to the adrenaline the body produces in instances of high stress. Regardless of the severity of the accident, you should always contact local law enforcement. The police provide a level of control and authority that is needed on the scene of an accident. Law enforcement will approach the situation objectively, documenting the accident and interviewing those involved, as well as witnesses to the accident. The evidence they acquire can later be used in a personal injury claim.

Gather Evidence

You will want to collect the other party’s information, such as their insurance information, name, and phone number. Even as a passenger, this information is vital to ensure your rights will be protected. The more you can learn early on, the easier it will be to build your personal injury case. Additional details you want to gather, if possible, include any pictures or videos of the scene and damage to all vehicles involved. While the police will often document the scene themselves, there is no harm in capturing what happened from as many angles as you can. It can also be beneficial to get the contact information of any witnesses to the accident who may be able to help with your future personal injury claim.

Contact a Rideshare Accident Attorney

Working with an experienced rideshare accident attorney is the best way to protect your rights. The negligent party needs to be held accountable, especially when damage or injuries are involved. These cases can be complex and require a skilled professional who understands evidence collection, document requirements, and the proper court proceedings. You put your safety in the hands of your rideshare driver. When they fail to uphold their end of that responsibility, they need to face the consequences. Contact us today.
