June is Pride Month, and whether you’re a member of the LGBTQ+ community or an ally, there
are several different ways to have fun and show support for the community. If you live in
Georgia and are looking for ways to celebrate Pride Month, there are plenty of ways to show
support and stand against hate.

What Is Pride Month?

Pride Month takes place in June, and it’s a month that is dedicated to the celebration of lesbian,
gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and other people (LGBTQ+) and pride. Beginning in 1970,
parades took place during June of each year to fight for LGBTQ+ rights and commemorate the
Stonewall Riots that occurred in 1969. Several decades later, Pride Month was recognized
federally.

Pride Month is a celebratory time for LGBTQ+ people and allies, and there are several ways to
celebrate pride in June.

Attend a Parade

Parades take place across the globe, and Georgia is proud to host a couple of their own. In
Augusta and Atlanta, both allies and people in the LGBTQ+ community gather to celebrate those
in the community and show solidarity with them. Parades can also be used as demonstrations for
legal rights, primarily gay marriage. Parades usually feature drag queens, dancers, and music,
and parades sometimes take time to honor historical LGBTQ+ figures.

Volunteer

By supporting a local charity that works to better the lives of the LGBTQ+ community, you’re
helping show solidarity to a community that has gone through several hardships and felt isolated
from the rest of the world. There are several charities online and locally that you can support,
including the Atlanta Pride Committee and The Trevor Project.

Become an Ally

For those not a part of the LGBTQ+ community, you can still support the movement by
becoming an ally. It can be difficult for people in the community to discuss how they feel, and it
can be challenging to find a way to respond, as well. It’s crucial to consider how you respond to
the LGBTQ+ community, and if you can be caring and empathetic, your friends and loved ones
will feel safer and more open for discussion.

Six Flags Pride Parties

Six Flags Over Georgia is hosting its own Pride Parties from June 2nd to June 17th. These
parties consist of fun activities such as backyard games, dancing, a photoshoot, and more. Pride-
themed food such as rainbow layer cakes and celebration funnel cakes will be available during
Pride Month, allowing everyone in the community to celebrate pride.

Begin a Program at Work

If your workplace has LGBTQ+ employees, or you wish to make your workplace safer for those
in the community, consider starting your own program. For example, your workplace can begin
its own T-shirt contest. Whoever has the best pride-themed design can then create a T-shirt for
everyone and distribute them during June. No matter what you choose to do, bring the
celebration of Pride Month into your business and encourage everyone to educate themselves
and take part in a fun activity.

Be an Advocate

If you believe someone is being treated unfairly due to their sexual orientation, you can stand up
for them and help them feel included. Open a dialogue with people who may need education on
the topic and create an environment where people will feel safe and comfortable.
